A Fine Madness

“Fall down seven times, get up eight.”  — Buddhist Teaching

Sometimes it seems as thought the whole world has gone mad. The news media report stories of ward, murder, recession, and gloom. To be sure, some of those things are happening.

Yet, elsewhere, people smile. They carry on with courage and compassion. They know life is what you make it to be, and see through the “news” to a simple truth: These negative, life- destroying events are caused, for the most part, by people who live in fear.

People who live in fear forget that there is a Great Exchange going on, a Beneficial Value Exchange that says you receive in the same measure with which you give. That rule never fails to be true.

Granted, there will always be those who do great harm because their great fear leads them to perform acts of what they perceive as self preservation. But in the end they destroy themselves and everything around them.

We know that life brings challenges. Wen we fall, we dust ourselves off and get back up. Then we take the raw material life delivers and use it to create the art that is our existence.

Exercise

Consider this week as your opportunity to engage The Great Exchange. In every interaction, in each transaction, seek the process that delivers maximum value to all who are involved — even on the periphery. Stand in the calm that is ever within you. And, if you do fall, don’t curse at “fate.” Stand and reengage.

That is your creative life, your unique gift to the world.
